Third Annual Artspace111 Regional Juried Exhibition
Opening Reception | June 24, 2016 | 5:00 – 8:30pm
Exhibition on Display | June 24 – August 6, 2016
The 3rd Annual Artspace111 Regional Juried Exhibition, juried by the distinguished Director of the Kimbell Art Museum, Eric M. Lee.
Eric M. Lee has served as the fourth director of the Kimbell Art Museum since March 2009. During this time, the Museum underwent design development and construction of a new pavilion designed by Renzo Piano, which opened in late 2013 and complements Louis Kahn’s original landmark structure of 1972. Acquisition highlights of Lee’s tenure include Michelangelo’s Torment of Saint Anthony, which is the only painting by the artist in the Americas; Poussin’s Ordination, from the artist’s famed series of Seven Sacraments; and Ruisdael’s Edge of a Forest by a Grainfield, which is now one of the most important Dutch landscapes in America. Exhibitions hosted by the Kimbell during Lee’s directorship include Caravaggio and His Followers in Rome (2011–12), Bernini: Sculpting in Clay (2013), Fiery Pool: The Maya and the Mythic Sea (2010), The Age of Picasso and Matisse: Modern Masters from the Art Institute of Chicago (2013-14), Faces of Impressionism: Portraits from the Musee d’Orsay (2014-15), Gustave Caillebotte: The Painter’s Eye, among others.

Metamorphosis-Painting
Metamorphosis. Oil on canvas. 48"x60". 2016.
In my recent works most of the portraits and characters seem to be transforming or turning into something else. Part of these ideas come from those common existential questions about the universe, life and death, which usually leaves me with a bigger pile of questions instead of answers.
The definition of Metamorphosis refers to change from one form to another. It could be a physical, psychological or spiritual change. Everything transforms to live or to die, to adapt, or to become something else: one with earth, air, or with others.

Moon Caryatids/Structures
Moon Caryatid 1. 40"x30". Oil on canvas.
As part of the 'Architecture of the Moon' series, these imaginary portraits of women, when merging with geometric and other elements, become objects or columns/caryatids of a possible structure.
Women Astronauts
Lunar Girl. 24"x24". Oil on canvas.
Stellar Girl. 24"x24". Oil on canvas.
Space Woman. 24"x24". Oil on canvas.
According to my readings on Zecharia Sitchin’s book “the 12th Planet”, humans are not from Earth originally, but created through genetic manipulation in ancient times thousands upon thousands of years ago by a superior and more technologically advanced race. In exploring these concepts, these women astronauts represent superior beings or goddesses, creators and guardians of Earth.

"Stellar Girl"
"Stellar Girl". Oil on canvas. 24"x24". 2015.
The possible connections between human-geometry are primordial in my work. I am captivated by the dialogue that comes out of these human and geometric arrangements;
